The American Lawyer – Litigation Department of the Year 2012 The American Lawyer has once again named Gibson Dunn the winner of its sixth biennial “Litigation Department of the Year” competition. This honor represents a back-to-back win for Gibson Dunn and marks the first time a law firm has won the competition twice. In selecting Gibson Dunn as the “Litigation Department of the Year,” The American Lawyer recognized the firm’s “stack of victories in some of the country’s thorniest cases” and noted the “brains, bench strength, and bravado” of its litigators. The magazine also named Gibson Dunn as the winner in the Labor and Employment category and named Theodore B. Olson as one of the five finalists for “Litigator of the Year.” The firm is profiled in the January 2012 issue.
The American Lawyer – A-List Gibson Dunn achieved its best ranking ever, rising to fourth place on The American Lawyer's most prestigious survey, the "A-List." The list features the nation’s "20 most successful law firms" based on four factors: revenue per lawyer, pro bono commitment, diversity among lawyers, and associate satisfaction. This is the firm’s sixth consecutive appearance on this list. The A-List appears in the July/August 2011 issue.
National Law Journal – Pro Bono Hot List Gibson Dunn was one of 10 law firms featured on National Law Journal’s 2012 Pro Bono Hot List, recognized for its work on Barrera v. Boughton, a suit filed in Connecticut district court on behalf of eight day laborers who were wrongly arrested by Danbury, Connecticut police in 2006, that was led by New York partner Joel Cohen. A profile of the case ran in the January 2, 2012 issue.
Corporate Board Member – America’s Best Corporate Law Firms and Top 25 National Firms Ranked by General Counsels Corporate Board Member magazine and the global business advisory firm FTI Consulting, Inc. ranked Gibson Dunn both nationally and regionally in their annual America’s Best Corporate Law Firms study, “a comprehensive ranking by U.S. corporate directors and general counsel of the top 25 national corporate law firms.” Gibson Dunn ranked 10th on the top 25 national corporate law firms list as determined by corporate directors and 11th on the list determined by general counsel of U.S. public companies. Rankings were based on surveys that asked both groups to identify those “firms of national scope and reputation they would most likely retain to handle a variety of corporate legal matters.” They are featured in the second quarter 2012 issue of the magazine.
BTI Consulting – BTI Client Service 30 In 2011, BTI Consulting named Gibson Dunn among its BTI Client Service 30, a list of “the 30 law firms clients say deliver the absolute best client service.” This year, BTI asked more than 300 corporate counsel at Fortune 1000 companies to rank law firms on 17 key activities they use to select and evaluate outside counsel, including client focus, commitment to help, understanding client’s business and value for the dollar.
Chambers and Partners In its 2011 edition, Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business awarded Gibson Dunn 53 first-tier rankings, of which 15 were firm practice group rankings, and 38 were individual lawyer rankings. Overall, the firm earned 215 rankings - 63 firm practice group rankings and 152 individual lawyer rankings.
Chambers Global 2012 recognized Gibson Dunn with 23 firm rankings and 55 individual rankings globally, regionally in Latin America and the Middle East, and in Belgium, Brunei, China, France, India, Russia, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom and the United States. The 2012 edition of Chambers UK recognized Gibson Dunn with 11 individual rankings and four firm rankings. Gibson Dunn earned six firm rankings and seven individual rankings in the 2012 edition of Chambers Asia Pacific. Chambers Europe 2012 awarded Gibson Dunn 18 rankings: 11 individual rankings and seven practice group rankings.
Best Lawyers in America and Best Lawyers International The Best Lawyers in America® 2012 recognized 105 Gibson Dunn partners as leading lawyers in 44 practice areas. Best Lawyers is based on peer-review survey in which more than 41,000 leading attorneys cast almost 3.9 million votes on the legal abilities of other lawyers in their practice areas. Best Lawyers also recognized 15 Gibson Dunn partners as leading lawyers in 18 practice areas in Belgium, France, Germany, Singapore and the UK.
U.S. News & World Report and Best Lawyers – Best Law Firms The U.S. News Media Group and Best Lawyers awarded Gibson Dunn 91 top-tier practice area rankings in their 2011-2012 Best Law Firms survey, making it one of the top 20 firms with the most first-tier rankings and the firm with the most first-tier rankings in Los Angeles. Overall, Gibson Dunn earned 146 rankings in seven states/metropolitan areas and nationally. The rankings were based on surveys regarding law firm “expertise, responsiveness, cost-effectiveness and civility, and whether it deserved to be recommended for work.” The national first-tier rankings are featured in the U.S. News & World Report’s special Money issue, published on November 15, 2011.
Institutional Investor – Benchmark Litigation In the 2012 edition of Benchmark Litigation, Gibson Dunn was recognized in seven national litigation practice areas and earned high recommendations for the firm’s litigation practices in California, New York and Washington, D.C. The publication also named 25 partners as Litigation Stars and nine Future Stars. According to Benchmark, “Gibson Dunn & Crutcher is unanimously championed by peers, and those on its seemingly ever-swelling roster of star attorneys are acknowledged nationally as well as in their respective home jurisdictions. Clients are equally vocal in championing the firm, with one referring to its stable of litigators as ‘very smart lawyers who think of creative solutions to meet the company’s goals, willing to think outside the box and go against the grain of common defense tactics.’”
Institutional Investor – Benchmark Appellate Benchmark Appellate named Gibson Dunn a top-tier National Appellate firm in 2012 and gave the firm its top recommendation in the 5 regional categories. In addition to the firm rankings, eight partners were named Appellate Litigation Stars.
Legal 500 Gibson Dunn received 35 practice category rankings, including six top-tier rankings, in the 2011 edition of the Legal 500 – United States, and 11 partners were recognized as Leading Lawyers in their respective practices. The UK Legal 500 2011 recognized Gibson Dunn in 13 practice areas and named four partners as Leading Lawyers. The Legal 500 EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) 2012 recognized the firm in 12 categories in Belgium, France, Germany and UAE, and recommended 15 Gibson Dunn attorneys in their respective practice areas, with some listed in more than one category. The Legal 500 - Asia Pacific recognized Gibson Dunn's Singapore office in six categories in its 2012 edition.
International Financial Law Review – IFLR 1000 The 2012 edition of IFLR1000, a guide to the world’s leading financial law firms, recognized Gibson Dunn in six U.S. categories: Capital Markets – Debt and Equity; Capital Markets – High Yield Debt; Investment Funds: Private Equity – Fund Formation; Mergers and Acquisitions; Private Equity – Transactions; and Restructuring and Insolvency. The firm was also recommended in six international categories: Brazil – International Firms in Brazil; Germany – Mergers and Acquisitions; Singapore – Capital Markets: Foreign Firms; Singapore – Restructuring and Insolvency: Foreign Firms; United Arab Emirates – Financial and Corporate; and Western Europe and Central and Eastern Europe – EU Competition.
Asian Legal Business – ALB's Fast 30 Asian Legal Business has named Gibson Dunn among its ALB Fast 30 2010, a list of 30 law firms that "deliver the lightning growth that has become a hallmark of the Asian market." ALB recognized the Firm's new Hong Kong office and lateral hire of former GE compliance and litigation counsel, Kelly Austin, who targets white-collar crime and corporate compliance, "both areas which are considered to be among the fastest-growing in the Asia Pacific legal services market." The ALB Fast 30 list appears in the January 2011 issue.
Women in Law Empowerment Forum – Gold Standard Certification Award Gibson Dunn has earned the Women in Law Empowerment Forum’s Gold Standard Certification Award. WILEF launched its certification initiative to publicly recognize law firms that have integrated women into their highest leadership positions. Law firms received certification if they met three of six goals set by WILEF. Gibson Dunn met four goals – that women account for at least 10 percent of firm chairs and managing partners; 20 percent of the firm's primary governance committee; 20 percent of the firm's compensation committee; and 10 percent of the top half of the most highly compensated partners. Out of 300 invitees, only 32 law firms received certification, and Gibson Dunn is one of the few large law firms on the list.

Chambers and Partners – Award for Excellence 2011 Chambers and Partners named Gibson Dunn as the winner of the Chambers USA Award for Excellence 2011 in the category of Securities Regulation (including Advisory and Enforcement). The Excellence Awards are based on the research for the 2011 edition of Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business and reflect a law firm’s preeminence in key practice areas, as well as notable achievements over the past 12 months including outstanding work, impressive strategic growth and excellence in client service.
National Law Journal – Appellate Hot List The National Law Journal named Gibson Dunn to its 2011 Appellate Hot List, which recognized 17 firms that "made exemplary contributions to appellate practice during the past year" and "demonstrated an impressive track record overall." Additionally, Gibson Dunn was one of three firms featured under the Winning Strategies section, which profiled the firm's success for Chevron in the Lago Agrio matter. The Appellate Hot List was published on April 18, 2011.
Law360 – 2011 Practice Groups of the Year Law360 selected Gibson Dunn among its top five Practice Groups of the Year in five separate practice group categories: Appellate, Class Action, Employment, International Trade, and Securities. Winning firms were chosen based on “the significance of the litigation wins or deals worked on; the size and complexity of the litigation wins or deals worked on; and the number of significant, large or complex deals the firms worked on or lawsuits the firm had wins in.” The list of winners was published on January 1, 2012.
Global Competition Review – Global Elite and GCR 100 Gibson Dunn’s antitrust practice was ranked 11th in the 2012 edition of Global Competition Review’s GCR100 - Global Elite ranking, a list of the top 20 antitrust practices in the world. The Global Elite ranking is based on several factors: size of the practice, global reach of the practice, number of lawyers listed in The International Who's Who of Competition Lawyers and Economists, stability of the practice (as measured by hires and departures), and the number of votes received from rival firms. Gibson Dunn was also ranked as an Elite firm in the United States: California section, as a Highly Recommended firm in the United States: Government Antitrust and United States: New York categories, and listed among the top practices in the United States: Texas section.
U.S. News & World Report and Best Lawyers – ERISA Litigation Law Firm of the Year The U.S. News Media Group and Best Lawyers named Gibson Dunn its Law Firm of the Year in the Litigation – ERISA category as part of its 2011-2012 Best Law Firms survey. Only one law firm ranked in each national legal practice area received this recognition. Gibson Dunn received this award based on a combination of factors including the “high performance on surveys of clients about [the] firm’s work in the practice area” and “the high regard that lawyers in other firms in the same practice area have for [the] Firm.” The recognition is featured in the U.S. News & World Report’s special Money issue, published on November 15, 2011.
Commercial Property Executive – Leading Real Estate Law Firms Gibson Dunn ranked 9th in Commercial Property Executive magazine’s list of Leading Real Estate Law Firms. The ranking is based on “the age of the firm, the number of legal and non-practitioner staff and offices, publicly reported revenue, adjusted revenue per employee, number and experience level of real estate counsel, length of real estate practice and several other factors.” The list is published in the September 2011 issue of the magazine.
Global Arbitration Review – GAR 100 Global Arbitration Review listed Gibson Dunn in the 2010 edition of GAR 100, its annual guide to the international arbitration capabilities of law firms. While noting the "recent creation" of Gibson Dunn's formal practice group, "a reporter noted that, in conversations with arbitration groups in London during 2008, Gibson Dunn began to be identified as a firm that was being seen far more often on pitches and making moves."
Asian-MENA Counsel – In-House Community Firms of the Year Gibson Dunn was recognized by Asian-MENA Counsel magazine in its annual “In-House Community Firms of the Year” list for 2011 as a Firm of the Year in the categories: Indonesia – Energy & Natural Resources and Indonesia – Telecommunications, Media & Technology (TMT). Gibson Dunn also received an honorable mention in the category of Hong Kong – Compliance/Regulatory. The list is based on a survey of in-house counsel as part of the publication’s annual “Representing Corporate Asia & Middle East” feature.
Asian-MENA Counsel – Deals of the Year Asian-Mena Counsel magazine has named two Gibson Dunn matters among its annual list of Deals of the Year, which features 39 winning transactions selected “with an eye on uniqueness, innovation, size, and complexity.” Singapore partner Saptak Santra represented the noteholders in the winning deal, “PT Mobile-8 Telecom Tbk: restructuring of guaranteed secured notes due 2012,” which was noted as “ground-breaking for its size, complexity and innovation.” Also featured was the “Harbin Electric take private,” in which Los Angeles partner Jon Layne and associate Shawn Domzalski represented the Special Committee of the Board of Directors for Harbin. The matter was noted as the “largest successful going private transaction to date,” winning recognition for its “complexity and uniqueness.” The special report was published in Volume 10 Issue 1, 2012.
Latin Lawyer – M&A Deal of the YearLatin Lawyer has named Heineken and FEMSA's share swap its 2010 M&A Deal of the Year. Gibson Dunn represented Heineken in the $7.43 billion acquisition of FEMSA Cerveza, a subsidiary of FEMSA, Mexico's largest publicly listed beverage company. Additionally, Gibson Dunn's case Tellez v. Dole was named one of two runners-up in the Dispute of the Year category. LAWYER ACCOLADES Law360 – 2011 MVPs Law360 named nine Gibson Dunn partners among its 2011 MVPs, which honors attorneys “whose accomplishments in major litigation or transactions have raised the bar.” The 92 MVPs were selected from hundreds of nominations, and Gibson Dunn was one of the top three most-represented firms on the list. The MVPs from Gibson Dunn are Ted Boutrous, Dennis Friedman, Bill Kilberg, Adam Offenhartz, Mark Perry, Joel Sanders, Orin Snyder, Jim Walden and Joe Warin. The list was published on November 11, 2011.
The American Lawyer – Dealmakers of 2012 The American Lawyer magazine featured New York partner Lois Herzeca as one of its Dealmakers of the Year 2012, which profiled 12 lawyers “who played critical roles in last year’s most notable transactions.” Herzeca was recognized her representation of Transatlantic Holdings, which ultimately merged with Alleghany Corporation. The article was published in the April 2012 issue.
Law360 – Top 10 Female Deal Makers Law360 named New York partner Barbara Becker to its list of Top Female Deal Makers, which features the 10 leading female attorneys in the field of mergers and acquisitions. A panel of six editors selected the winners from nearly 70 nominations. The list and Becker's profile were published on October 31, 2011.
Washingtonian Magazine – Washington’s Best Lawyers and Stars of the Bar In its “Washington’s Best Lawyers” feature, Washingtonian magazine ranked Theodore B. Olson as the No. 1 on its 30 “Superstars” list, which features the area’s “very best legal talent.” In addition, 16 partners were named to the magazine’s “Stars of the Bar” list in their respective practice areas, which features “Washington’s best legal minds in 30 categories”: Miguel Estrada, Barry Goldsmith, Joseph Kattan, William Kilberg, Brian Lane, Ray Ludwiszewski, Karen Manos, C.F. Muckenfuss, John Olson, Theodore Olson, Arthur Pasternak, Daniel Plaine, Eugene Scalia, John Sturc, F. Joseph Warin, and Joseph West. The list appears in the December 2011 issue.
BTI Consulting – Client Service All-Stars BTI Consulting named Steven Finley, Stephen Glover, John Herfort, John Olson and Denis Salmon to its 2012 BTI Client Service All-Stars list, placing Gibson Dunn among only three other law firms with five Client Service All-Stars. The All-Stars list features lawyers who “are identified solely and exclusively by corporate counsel” as “the leaders of client service excellence.”
Daily Journal – Top Women Lawyers The Daily Journal has named partners Ashlie Beringer, Catherine Conway, Ruth Fisher, Kay Kochenderfer, Marjorie Lewis and Debra Wong Yang to its list of Top Women Lawyers. All four are profiled in the May 9, 2012 issue of the Daily Journal.
Daily Journal – 75 Leading IP Litigators The Daily Journal has named Wayne Barsky to its list of the 75 Leading IP Litigators. Attorneys are selected based on the impact their work has had on intellectual property law. The list was published in the April 18, 2012 issue.
Daily Journal – California's Top 100 Lawyers The Daily Journal has named Theodore Boutrous and Mary Murphy to its annual list of the “Top 100 Lawyers in California.” Boutrous and Murphy are featured in the September 27, 2011 issue.
Daily Journal – 20 Under 40 The Daily Journal featured Los Angeles partner Jeffrey Le Sage on its annual list of Top 20 California Attorneys Under 40. The article appeared in the January 18, 2012 issue.
California Lawyer – CLAY Awards California Lawyer featured partner Theodore Boutrous as an honoree in its 2012 California Lawyer Attorneys of the Year Awards. The CLAY Awards featured 55 attorneys in 19 areas of practice based on their achievements in the legal field in 2011. Boutrous was honored for his work on behalf of Wal-Mart before the U.S. Supreme Court, which unanimously reversed class certification in the largest employment class action in history in June. The CLAY Awards were published in the magazine’s March 2012 issue.
San Francisco Business Times – Most Influential Women in Bay Area Business The San Francisco Business Times named San Francisco partner Mary Murphy to its annual list of the Most Influential Women in Bay Area Business. The list was published in the April 27, 2012 issue.
The Times – Law 100
The Times has named Charles Falconer to The Times Law 100 2012, its annual list of the 100 most influential lawyers in the United Kingdom. The lawyers were selected by a panel of 12 judges drawn from politics, the judiciary, academia, the media and the law. The list appears in the March 15 issue.
The Lawyer – Hot 100 The Lawyer has named London corporate partner Selina Sagayam to its annual “Hot 100” list. The list features “100 high-achieving” lawyers in the United Kingdom who are “blazing a trail in their chosen fields.” The list was published January 9, 2012.
The Recorder – Attorneys of the Year Gibson Dunn partners Theodore Boutrous, Mary Murphy, of counsel Neil Sekhri and associate Jim Abrams have been named 2011 Attorneys of the Year in California by The Recorder. Mary, Neil and Jim were selected for their work on the massive Treasure Island and Parkmerced redevelopment projects in San Francisco. Their profile can be viewed here. Ted was selected for his successful argument before the U.S. Supreme Court on behalf of Walmart, where the Court unanimously reversed class certification of the largest employment discrimination class in U.S. history. Crain's New York Business – 40 Under 40 Crain’s New York Business named New York partner Aric Wu to its “40 Under 40,” an annual list of “40 of New York’s most ambitious young achievers.” The honorees, who were selected from nearly 700 nominations, “share an intense passion about their careers, they are tireless cheerleaders for their industries, and they pursue their goals with tenacity.” The list and a profile of Aric Wu were published on March 26, 2012.
Law360 – Rising Stars Law360 named three Gibson Dunn attorneys among its 2012 Rising Stars, which recognizes “attorneys under the age of 40 whose accomplishments in major litigation or transactions belie their age.” Washington, DC partners Jason Schwartz and Amir Tayrani, and Orange County associate Joshua Jessen were selected in their respective practice areas of Employment, Appellate and Privacy & Consumer Protection. The list of Rising Stars was published on March 16, 2012.
National Law Journal – 40 Under 40 The National Law Journal named Dallas partner Jim Ho to its “Minority Forty Under Forty” list, which recognizes the top 40 minority lawyers in the country. The NLJ honored minority lawyers in law firms, government, academia and public interest “who have used the law to effect big change.” The feature was published on October 31, 2011.
NAPABA – Best Lawyers Under 40 The National Asian Pacific American Bar Association named Julian Poon to its 2011 list of “Best Lawyers Under 40.” The list features 20 lawyers who “have achieved prominence in their respective areas of law while demonstrating an unwavering dedication to the APA community.” The lawyers were honored at NAPABA’s annual convention in Atlanta, Georgia on November 19, 2011.
The Recorder – Fast Track The Recorder has named Gibson Dunn attorneys Theane Evangelis Kapur, Jim Abrams, Enrique Monagas and Joshua Jessen to its 2012 Lawyers on the Fast Track list. The list features 50 California attorneys in their first 10 years out of law school “whose early accomplishments indicate they will be tomorrow’s top lawyers and leaders.” The Recorder selected attorneys based on their work, community involvement and leadership within their firms or practice communities. The feature will be published in the June 4, 2012 issue of The Recorder.
Hollywood Reporter – Power Lawyers The Hollywood Reporter named partners Scott Edelman, Ruth Fisher, Orin Snyder and Larry Ulman to its Power Lawyers 2011 list, featuring the “100 attorneys whose work behind the scenes has most influenced the entertainment business.” The list was published on July 13, 2011.
Los Angeles Business Journal – Who's Who in Law The Los Angeles Business Journal selected Linda Curtis and Jon Layne for its annual list of Who’s Who in Law, which this year recognized 40 of Los Angeles’ top corporate attorneys. The list appeared in the October 10, 2011 issue.
San Francisco Business Times – Northern California Commercial Real Estate Women of Influence The San Francisco Business Times has named San Francisco partner Mary Murphy to its list of 2011 Northern California Commercial Real Estate Women of Influence. The list was published in the October 7, 2011 issue.
Daily Journal – Land Use Leaders 2011 The Daily Journal has named partners Amy Forbes and Mary Murphy to its inaugural list of Land Use Leaders. The list features 25 California-based lawyers. The list appears in the April 27, 2011 issue. Daily Journal – Real Estate Dealmakers 2011 The Daily Journal has named Jesse Sharf to its inaugural list of 2011 Real Estate Dealmakers. The list featured 20 California real estate lawyers with "vibrant transactional practices" who've handled some of the biggest and most complex deals in the last year. Sharf was honored for his work on behalf of clients that include Rockpoint Group and Paulson & Co. The list was published in the February 23, 2011 edition of the Daily Journal.
Human Resource Executive – 100 Most Powerful Employment Attorneys Partners William Kilberg and Eugene Scalia were named among the 100 Most Powerful Employment Attorneys in the nation by Human Resource Executive magazine and Lawdragon, an online legal publication and directory. The list is featured in the June 16, 2011 issue of Human Resource Executive.
Turnarounds & Workouts – 2011 Outstanding Young Restructuring Lawyers Turnarounds & Workouts has named Matthew Kelsey to its 2011 list of Outstanding Young Restructuring Lawyers. The list features 12 U.S.-based attorneys under the age of 40 who have handled cases that are large, complex and highly visible within the last 12 months. The list was published in the April 2011 issue.
Global Competition Review – Cartel Lawyer of the Year Global Competition Review named San Francisco partner Gary Spratling as Cartel Lawyer of the Year at its annual Awards Dinner on February 4, 2011.
TIME Magazine – 2010 Time 100 TIME named Washington, D.C. partner Theodore B. Olson to the 2010 TIME 100, the magazine's annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world. Olson is recognized in the Thinkers category, along with David Boies for their work in challenging the constitutionality of California's Proposition 8, the California constitutional amendment that eliminates marriage rights for same-sex couples. The two were cited by TIME Magazine as the "lions of America's legal establishment" and "they've put on an extraordinary case in the federal court system . . . They remind us that the ideas binding us together in our constitutional democracy are far more important than those separating us." Asian Legal Business – ALB Hot 100 Asian Legal Business has named Hong Kong partner Kelly Austin to its Hot 100 list that features notable attorneys across Asia.
