Lisa A. Alfaro is the partner in charge of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher's São Paulo office. She is a Co-Chair of the firm's Latin America Practice Group and a member of the Corporate Transactions Group and the Energy and Infrastructure Practice Group. Ms. Alfaro is a member of the New York bar and prior to heading the firm’s São Paulo office, she was based in the firm’s New York office.
Ms. Alfaro’s areas of expertise include mergers and acquisitions, project finance, private equity transactions, and general corporate matters. She has represented U.S. and foreign clients in acquisitions, divestitures and joint ventures in the U.S. and Latin America. Ms. Alfaro’s experience also includes representing developers, companies and investors in power, infrastructure and alternative energy investments and transactions throughout U.S. and Latin America, with a focus on Brazil. She has represented clients from the power generation and gas transportation industries before commercial lenders and multi-lateral agencies.
Ms. Alfaro has developed an expertise in the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act ("FCPA") and conducts FCPA investigations and analysis relating to business operations in Brazil. Ms. Alfaro assists in the review and revision of anti-corruption policies and procedures and advises Brazilian entities on FCPA compliance, including company practices, internal compliance programs, human resource concerns, and remedial measures for improving compliance. She meets with compliance officers, senior executives and legal officers to analyze business activities and compliance matters. Ms. Alfaro is a member of the team of international lawyers assisting the first non-US Compliance Monitor in connection with the largest FCPA settlement to date.
Ms. Alfaro joined the firm in 1995 after earning her Juris Doctor from Stanford Law School, where she was a member of the Law and Policy Review. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in government with high honors from the University of Texas in 1991. Ms. Alfaro is a member of the California and New York bars and speaks Spanish and Portuguese.
